Pipe and profile cutting problems: cut ends that do not meet, bevel inconsistent, chain and magnet travel, circles that do not close, template tracking

The hand-torch faults (slag, gouging, backfire) are on the gas cutting page. This page is about what the machine adds on pipe and profile work: a chain or magnet that must track, a radius that must be locked, a template that must be traced with the right offset, and a cut that must come back to where it started. Each of those has two or three usual causes.

Seen with: TUBOCUT-MS magnetic and TUBOCUT-CS / HG chain-type pipe cutting and bevelling machines, CIRCO 600 / 1000 circle cutters, WING1800P magnetic-tracer profile cutter, pillar-mounted profile cutters, DualFire dual-torch carriage; acetylene and LPG.

Reviewed by the Cruxweld technical team, October 2026. Settings are starting points to confirm on a test piece; acceptance is decided by the code or drawing the job is built to. Checks marked “call” are for our technical team.

Safety first: Flashback arrestors at the regulators and non-return valves at the torch. Light with a friction lighter; test for leaks with soapy water only; no oil or grease on oxygen fittings. On a sustained backfire close the preheat oxygen, then the fuel, then the cutting oxygen at the torch, then the cylinders. Keep hands clear of chains, gears and roller wheels; disconnect the power before any adjustment of the drive.

Pipe cutting (chain and magnetic machines)

1Cut ends do not meet after a full circumference

The machine drifted along the pipe: chain slack or twisted, chain links wrong for the diameter, wheels not square to the pipe, body not clamped (spring over-compressed or under-tightened), pipe not round or has a weld seam the wheels ride over, hoses pulling the body sideways.

Fix: Chain links by the rule Y = X + 11 (X = pipe outside diameter in cm, e.g. 114.3 mm pipe: 12 + 11 = 23 links); tension with the wing nut leaving a 1-2 mm gap and take up slack with the clutch disengaged; run a full dry cycle with the power off before lighting; loop the hoses so they never pull; mark the start and check the drift after a quarter turn on the first pipe of a batch.

2Bevel inconsistent around the pipe

Torch holder loose; torch not following the wall as the machine rides a seam or a dent; nozzle height changing; speed changing as the hoses drag.

Fix: Set the bevel on the holder in 5-degree steps and lock it; one size larger tip for bevels over 20 degrees; speed 20-30 % lower than for a square cut; grind the seam flush where the wheels pass; support the hoses.

3Chain slips, binds or jumps the gear

Chain rusty or distorted; chain fitted upside down (upper margin confused with the lower band); over-tightened so the machine lifts; dross on the sprocket.

Fix: Replace a damaged chain; fit it the right way; tighten only to the spring limit; clean the sprocket; keep the chain oiled.

4Magnetic machine slips or stalls (TUBOCUT-MS)

Magnet face fouled with slag; pipe wall thin or heavily scaled; non-magnetic pipe; speed too high on a bend.

Fix: Clean the magnet and the pipe path; magnetic machines are for carbon steel pipe only; reduce speed.

5Motor runs, machine does not move

Clutch disengaged or its pin broken; reduction gear slipping; wheel loose.

Fix: Engage the clutch; call for the gearbox.

6Travel jerky, vibration

Dross or foreign body on the rail or pipe; broken gear or clutch pin; loose axle or wheel; hoses disturbing the machine.

Fix: Clean; repair or replace the part; route hoses freely.

7Cannot run slow, or runs too fast

Supply voltage high or low; speed controller resistor.

Fix: Check the supply within 10 %; call for the controller.

8Cut will not start on the pipe

Start point not preheated to white heat; piercing instead of edge starting; tip too small for the wall.

Fix: Preheat fully; pierce at 15-20 mm stand-off then lower to 8-10 mm (acetylene) or 5-8 mm (LPG); tip by wall thickness, one size up for bevels.

Circle cutting (CIRCO 600 / 1000)

1Circle does not close, or the diameter is wrong

Radius rod not locked; machine rocking on its feet; centre point shifted during the cut; hoses pulling the arm.

Fix: Lock the radius rod after measuring; open the two feet to about 90 degrees, tighten the foot screws and add the auxiliary screw so it stands without rocking; set and re-measure the centre distance before lighting; loop the hoses.

2Radius inconsistent, oval cut

Cross bar slide loose; torch clearing the column by rubbing; clutch slipping under drag.

Fix: Lock the slide; with the clutch disengaged turn the rod by hand through a full circle and check clearance; clean and oil the rack and pinion.

3Torch does not rotate, lamp on

Clutch lever disengaged; direction switch at stop.

Fix: Engage the clutch; select forward or reverse; call for the switch.

4Speed unstable or will not vary

Potentiometer worn or loose; motor brushes.

Fix: Call for the potentiometer or brushes.

5Poor cut: slag not blown through, rough face

Wrong nozzle for the thickness; oxygen pressure low or speed high; nozzle bore blocked or damaged.

Fix: Nozzle and pressure from the table below; reduce speed until slag clears the bottom; clean with the right needle or replace.

Profile cutting with a magnetic tracer (WING1800P)

1Roller slips off the template

Template too thin or its edge not square; roller height wrong; template or roller dirty.

Fix: Mild steel template at least 6 mm, 8 mm or more for precision, with a smooth square edge; set the roller height with the vertical handwheel; keep both clean.

2Finished part the wrong size

Template offset not applied or applied the wrong way; kerf changed with a different nozzle.

Fix: Offset = roller radius minus half the kerf: add it for internal tracing, subtract for external; with a 10 mm roller: nozzle 1 (kerf 1.5 mm) 3.5 mm, nozzle 2 (1.75 mm) 3.25 mm, nozzle 3 (2.0 mm) 3.0 mm. Re-do the offset whenever the nozzle changes.

3Jerky or uneven travel round the template

Dirty roller or edge; hoses or cable pulling on the arm; gearbox dry or worn.

Fix: Clean; route hoses and cable freely; lubricate or service the gearbox.

4Motor does not run when the cutting oxygen is opened

Direction switch off; speed knob at zero; oxygen pressure low or the pressure switch not operating.

Fix: Set forward or reverse; turn the speed up; check the oxygen pressure; call for the pressure switch or board.

5Machine keeps running after the cut stops

Residual oxygen in the pressure-switch line (normal for a moment).

Fix: If it persists, set the direction switch to off and have the pressure switch checked.

6Profile mismatch on inside corners

Roller radius cannot follow a corner tighter than itself; template corner not relieved.

Fix: Relieve template corners by the roller radius, or accept the radius on the part.

Nozzle identification and cutting data, mild steel

Acetylene nozzles are marked G02 (or ANM on some torches) and LPG nozzles G03 (PM / PNM); the LPG type has a stepped or slotted preheat face. Using an acetylene nozzle on LPG gives a weak, slow preheat and popping; an LPG nozzle on acetylene backfires. Check the marking before you light.

Daily checks

  • Hoses, couplings and arrestors leak-tested with soapy water; hoses long enough for the full travel and looped so they never pull.
  • Nozzle bore cleaned with the correct needle; taper seat protected; nozzle tightened with two spanners.
  • Chain (or rail, radius rod, template) clean, undamaged and correctly tensioned or locked; dry run with the power off before lighting on a new set-up.
  • Roller wheels brushed clean of chips and dross, oiled at the oil holes; magnet face clean.
  • Feet or supports tight; machine does not rock.
  • Supply within 10 % of rated; machine earthed; direction switch and speed knob checked before start.

Questions we get asked

How often do the gearboxes need service?

Every six months in regular use: remove, wash out, re-grease, and replace a worn worm or wheel. Carbon brushes every three months or 1000 hours, replaced below 3 mm.

Can the pipe cutter bevel while it cuts?

Yes, set the torch angle on the holder, up to 45 degrees in 5-degree steps, with one size larger tip and a slower speed. A compound bevel (two angles) needs two passes.

Does the machine matter?

Each of these machines gives one thing a hand cannot: a constant speed on a fixed path. If the path (chain, rail, radius rod or template) is set up right and the torch data is right, the cut is right. Our gas cutting machines use standard G02 (acetylene) and G03 (LPG) nozzles, so the cutting data on this page applies across the range.
