Overview

The CWMIG400iJ is a MIG welding machine 400 amp class inverter for medium and heavy fabrication: structural steel, machine building, transport bodies, pipe and vessel work. It runs on a 415 V three-phase supply, draws a maximum of 16 kVA, and delivers up to 400 A for long seams on heavy plate.

It is a two-process machine. In MIG / MAG mode it welds with CO2, argon mixtures or gasless flux-cored wire in the 0.8–1.4 mm range. Switch to Stick (MMA) and the same power source runs electrodes for site repairs, root runs or positions where a torch will not reach. The wire feeder is a separate unit, so the power source stays near the mains point while the feeder goes to the job.

Who buys it: fabrication workshops moving up from a smaller machine that can no longer keep up, and plants that need a dependable second or third MIG station on the shop floor. If your work is mostly thin sheet and light fabrication, the MIG 250 welding machine is the better fit; if you run the thickest wire all day on heavy plate, look at the water-cooled MIG 500 system.

What is the CWMIG400iJ and how does it work?

It is an inverter-based gas metal arc welding (GMAW) power source. Mains power is rectified, chopped by IGBT switches at high frequency, stepped down through a compact transformer and rectified again into a smooth DC welding output. Because the switching frequency is far higher than mains frequency, the control circuit can correct the arc many times per millisecond — that is what gives an inverter its stable arc and low spatter compared with an old diode or thyristor set.

Metal-transfer waveform control shapes the current during each droplet transfer, so the arc stays quiet and spatter stays low across the 16–34 V range. An arc-striking and ball-removal circuit burns the wire end clean at the finish of every weld, so the next start is reliable. Current self-adaptation holds the arc steady when the operator’s stick-out varies within 30 mm of dry extension — useful on fillets in awkward positions.

To run it you need a 415 V three-phase outlet rated for 16 kVA, a cylinder of CO2 or argon-CO2 mixture with a regulator (not needed for gasless flux-cored wire), a spool of 0.8–1.4 mm wire, and forced-air cooling clearance around the cabinet.

Why fabricators choose the 400 A MIG welder

Long seams, one setup
The wire feeder goes to the job while the power source stays at the mains point, so long fillets on thick plate are welded without moving the machine.
Lower electricity bills
85% efficiency and 0.93 power factor draw less from the mains than a transformer machine of the same output.
Less grinding after welding
Waveform control keeps spatter low, so the finishing time on visible joints comes down.
One machine for shop and site
Stick mode covers repairs and root runs; the detachable feeder reaches the job while the power source stays put.

Key features

Stepless wire feed 1.5–20 m/min
Fine control from thin-sheet settings to full-power spray transfer.
2T / 4T torch trigger
Hold-to-weld for tacks, latch mode for long seams without finger fatigue.
Solid and flux-cored wire
Runs CO2, mixed gas and gasless flux-cored wire across the 0.8–1.4 mm range.
Class H insulation, IP21
Windings rated for high temperature; enclosure suited to indoor workshop use.
Arc-start and burn-back circuit
Clean wire end after every weld for a reliable next start.
Forced-air cooling
Keeps the power source within temperature through a full shift at 310 A.

Consumables and gas compatibility

Shielding gas: 100% CO2 for general mild-steel work at the lowest gas cost; argon – CO2 mixture for lower spatter and a flatter bead on visible joints. No gas is needed when running self-shielded flux-cored wire.

Wire: solid ER70S-6 or flux-cored wire in the 0.8–1.4 mm range; the mid sizes are the everyday choice, the largest for the heaviest work. Fit the matching drive roll and contact tip when you change diameter.

Stick mode: general-purpose and low-hydrogen electrodes within the 40–400 A range. Contact tips, nozzles, liners and drive rolls are stocked by Cruxweld as spares.

How to use the CWMIG400iJ

1
Connect. Plug into a 415 V three-phase outlet, connect the feeder interconnection cable, fit the gas regulator and open the cylinder.
2
Load wire. Mount the spool, feed the wire through the drive rolls and torch liner, and set the roll pressure so the wire feeds without slipping or crushing.
3
Set parameters. Choose MIG or Stick, select 2T or 4T, preset voltage and wire speed for the plate thickness on the digital display.
4
Weld. Clamp the earth close to the joint, keep a short, steady stick-out and run a test bead on scrap before the job.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of a MIG welding machine 400 amp from Cruxweld?
Pricing depends on the torch, cable lengths and accessories you need, so we quote each order. Send us a WhatsApp message on +91 88008 82983 with your application and you will get a quotation the same working day.
What plate thickness can the CWMIG400iJ weld?
At the upper end of the 40–400 A range with the thicker wire sizes it handles multi-pass welds on heavy plate. At the low end with the thinnest wire it welds light sheet without burn-through. Tell our technical team your plate range and they will confirm the wire and settings.
What power supply does it need?
A 415 V three-phase, 50/60 Hz supply with a tolerance of ±15%. Maximum draw is 16 kVA, so size the breaker and cable for that.
Can it run gasless flux-cored wire?
Yes. Both gas-shielded solid wire and self-shielded flux-cored wire in the 0.8–1.4 mm range are supported, so it can be used outdoors or on sites where cylinders are impractical.
What is the difference between the MIG 250 and the MIG 400?
The MIG 250 is a compact machine for sheet and light fabrication. The CWMIG400iJ gives up to 400 A, a separate wire feeder and a 450 A torch for heavy plate and production welding.
How far can the wire feeder be from the power source?
The feeder is a separate unit connected by an interconnection cable, so it can be carried to the job while the power source stays at the mains point. Cable length is chosen at the time of order.
What is the delivery time and warranty?
Delivery time depends on stock and your location; we confirm it with the quotation. Warranty terms are stated on the quotation and covered by our technical team on WhatsApp and video call.
