Fix it yourself: Cruxweld gas cutting machines (CPG-NM, UNITRACK-45K, CIRCO, TUBOCUT, WING1800P, DualFire)

A portable gas cutting machine is a small motor, a gearbox, a speed control and a torch. The torch faults are the same as any hand torch; the machine faults are the drive, the track and the hoses. This page is for the pug cutter, the trolley carriages, the circle cutter, the chain-type pipe cutters and the magnetic profile cutter.

Covers: CPG-NM pug cutter, UNITRACK-45K trolley, CIRCO 600 / 1000 circle cutters, TUBOCUT-MS / CS / HG pipe cutters, WING1800P profile cutter, DualFire DX-300 dual torch carriage, pillar-mounted profile cutter, Cut-N-Weld ProX torch kit.

Reviewed by the Cruxweld technical team, October 2026. Settings are starting points to confirm on a test piece; acceptance is decided by the code or drawing the job is built to. Checks marked “call” are for our technical team.

Safety first: Flashback arrestors at the regulators and non-return valves at the torch inlets. On a backfire that keeps burning (hissing in the torch): close the preheat oxygen, then the fuel gas, then the cutting oxygen at the torch, then the cylinders. Never test for leaks with a flame; never use oil or grease on oxygen fittings; light with a friction lighter. Disconnect the electrical supply before working on the drive.

Five checks before you call

  1. Power: 220 V within 10 %, earth connected, speed knob at 0 before switching on, fuse.
  2. Drive: clutch engaged after start-up, all wheels seated in the track grooves (or on the plate), drive wheel not lifted, track clean and not bent.
  3. Torch seat: 30-degree cone and nozzle seat clean, nozzle nut tightened with two spanners, no leak at the nut (soapy water).
  4. Gases: pressures set with gas flowing, oxygen purity, acetylene cylinder not drawn too fast, hoses looped and not dragging.
  5. Nozzle: correct size for the plate, clean, oxygen jet straight and centred in the preheat flame.

Fault table: what you see, what to check, when to call

What you seeCheck yourselfIf it persists

Daily and periodic care

  • Daily: track and wheels clean of slag; hoses looped; nozzle cleaned; leak check with soapy water; flashback arrestors in place.
  • Every 3 months or 1000 h: carbon brushes (replace below 3 mm).
  • Every 6 months: gearbox checked and greased; speed control contacts.
  • Store the track straight; do not bend or knock it; keep the guide groove clean.

Questions we get asked

Can I push the machine by hand along the track?

Only with the drive wheel lifted or the clutch disengaged. Pushing with the drive engaged damages the gearbox.

Does it run on LPG?

Yes, with the LPG nozzle for the plate thickness, a slightly higher fuel pressure and a nozzle height of 5-8 mm instead of 8-10 mm for acetylene. Expect a longer preheat.

Welding or cutting problem rather than a machine fault?

If the machine runs but the weld or cut is wrong, the cause is usually settings, consumables or the material. Start here:

Does the machine matter?

The machine gives a constant speed and height; the cut quality is then the nozzle, the pressures and the track. Keep two spare nozzles, a tip cleaner and a track cleaning brush with every machine.

Still stuck?

Send a photo of the weld or cut, your machine model, consumable and plate thickness. Our technical team replies on WhatsApp with the likely causes and the next checks to make.
